Schmidt was the principal cellist with the Vienna Philharmonic, and studied composition with Bruckner. One reviewer said Notre Dame's "sound-world runs from Wagner and Bruckner to Mahler, Strauss and Korngold. Oddly, it also brings Respighi to mind...a late-flowering hot-house bloom".
