Strong meat: Grange Park Opera stages Ponchielli's rarity, La Gioconda in a performance that full embraces the work's drama

Grange Park Opera planned to stage the work in 2020, and now finally this has come to pass.We caught Grange Park Opera's performance of Ponchielli's La gioconda on Thursday 16 June 2022. Directed by Stephen Medcalf, it featured Amanda Echalaz as Gioconda, Joseph Calleja as Enzo Grimaldi, Elisabetta Fiorillo as La Cieca, David Stout as Barnaba, Marco Spotti as Alvise Badoero and Ruxandra Donose as Laura. Stephen Barlow conducted the Gascoigne Orchestra. A Life On-Line: Christmas with Bach and Rossini, plus a New Year's Day in the Roaring 20s

Glyndebourne released the video of its 2005 production of Rossini's La Cenerentola as a Christmas treat for us all, with it free to watch on the Glyndebourne website until 4 January 2021. Directed by Peter Hall and conducted by Vladimir Jurowski, the production feature Ruxandra Donose as Cenerentola, Maxim Mironov as the Prince, Simone Alberghini as Dandini, Luciano Di Pasquale as Don Magnifico, Nathan Berg as Alidoro, and Raquela Sheeran and Lucia Cirillo as the Ugly Sisters.
