Then Reformation was a watershed in European history. But not simply because it divided the Christian church, which has always had divisions. It coincided with social change, hastened by technology. Without printing, would literacy have spread so fast ? Nowadays we have almost universal literacy, but not wisdom. Instead of knowledge, we get spin. People lie dead on streets all over the world, but we don't ask why. So what a relief to turn this afternoon to Munich, to an afternoon recital of music from the Reformation broadcast live on BR Klassik. The choir is the Windsbacher Knabendom, a Bavarian choir founded 946 in the aftermath of another watershed in European history., conducted by Martin Lehmann. Ubuntu – The Opera Durban’s Playhouse Opera Theatre will be the scene of a major landmark on the South African arts calendar with the world premiere season of Ubuntu – The Opera by Juan Burgers. Funded by the National Lotteries Commission, the new work is presented by Bravo Africa Entertainment in collaboration with Esayidi FET College. With Raphael Vilakazi as its executive producer, the production will have five performances in the Playhouse Opera Theatre between November 17 and 22. Burgers’ creation is presented as a 21st anniversary salute to South Africa’s democracy, offering a magnificent showcase of some of the country’s finest operatic talent. Set to a score underpinned by the composer’s strong melodic drive and his bent for richly conceived vocal and orchestral writing, the heroic work is written in two acts with a prologue.
