Shamus O'Brien: withdrawn by the composer for political reasons, Stanford's most popular opera languished in the 20th century but all that seems set to change
[…] these still are not well known; currently only The Travelling Companion is available in a complete on disc [from SOMM Records]. Even a work like Shamus O'Brien has no recording. This is all going to change as Retrospect Opera is releasing the first studio recording of Stanford's Shamus O'Brien with David Parry conducting the Orchestra of Scottish Opera plus soloists Brendan Collins, Anna Brady, Gemma Ni Bhriain, Ami Hewitt, Joseph Doody, Andrew Gavin and Rory Dunne with Irish piper Jarlath Henderson.I recently caught up by Zoom with conductor David Parry who was in Scotland amid performances of Jonathan Dove's new opera, Marx in London, a work which David refers to as fantastic. It has been something of a hit, too, with audiences with Scottish Opera selling out the Theatre Royal in Glasgow.Whilst Shamus O'Brien was popular in its time, David thinks that its very Irishness has mitigated against more recent performances in the complicated post-war […]

Developing an individual practice after many years of collaborative composition, a recital by composer/performer Edward Henderson showcasing composition at Morley College
Edward HendersonComposer Edward Henderson, who is part of the composer-performer group Bastard Assignments (described as "one of the most exciting forces in contemporary music" by the Financial Times) also teaches composition at Morley College. Composition has a long history at Morley with Vaughan Williams, Holst, Tippett and Cardew either teaching composition or being head of music, and Henderson is now putting himself in the spotlight. In a concert intended to showcase Henderson's recent works and highlight the role of composition at Morley, he will be performing his own compositions at Morley College on 1 December 2023, alongside composer/performer Francesca Fargion.Henderson is performing two works for piano, and for piano and playback, which are the results of an impulse he had to develop an individual practice after many years of collaborative composition and group performance; he wanted to make pieces that he could perform on the piano. He is being joined by […]

Composition workshop at Morley College led by Edward Henderson from Bastard Assignments
The Solid performed by Edward Henderson for Bastard AssignmentsComposer Edward Henderson (one of the lively minds that make up Bastard Assignments) is now leading the composition workshop at Morley College. The new term starts on 18 September and the course is aimed at those age 19 and over. The course will "enable students to build completed pieces of music through a mixture of taught techniques and utilisation of students' own musical ideas. Students will be given frameworks in which to write pieces and there will be continuous tutor feedback and class discussion of the works as they build up. Performances of pieces will happen in class, or with Morley groups that composers write for."The entry requirements are fluid, again from the website - "a solid theoretical background (ABRSM 6+ or equivalent) and fluent reading and writing of standard music notation are useful but not essential. Experience with music and sound software […]

Tamblyn Henderson, Jr.As with Richard Hickox's first recording of the Vaughan Williams Sea Symphony, this issue shows that ridiculous over-dividing of movements isn't just a recent development - 17 tracks here for a three movement work. Lack of documentation accompanying downloads also diminishes the value of this otherwise very fine performance and recording.01 - 04 Benjamin Britten: Piano Concerto, op.13 * [32'53]05 - 19 Edward Elgar: Variations on an Original Theme, op.36, 'Enigma' [35'33]Robert Leonardy- piano*; […]
