Somewhere for the Weekend: the Pelagian Opera Festival
The Salutation hotel in Sandwich, Kent is playing host to a new opera festival which offers the prospect of opera, cabaret, fine gardens and lovely food. The inaugural Pelagian Opera Festival, which takes its theme as As If By Magic, runs from 28 June to 7 July, and there will be afternoon performances of an abridged version of Mozart's The Magic Flute, billed as Die kleine Zauberflöte, as well as opera cabaret in the evenings.Performed to piano accompaniment, Die kleine Zauberflöte will be directed by Catrin Wyn Davies with young singers from The Royal Conservatoire Den Haag. In the evenings there will be the chance to dine on the terrace and be serenaded by an eclectic mix of opera favourites and less well-known Baroque and Classical arias to a piano accompaniment.Full details from The Salutation's website.

The Hague’s Art Museum Changes Its Name Because Foreigners Can’t Pronounce It
As the director of what is currently the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag says, “The [Dutch] ‘G’ is a very strange sound for people from abroad.” Not to mention that most of them don’t understand the word gemeente (municipal). The new name will be Kunstmuseum Den Haag. — The Art Newspaper

[…] piece of choice for flautists playing with my school and youth orchestras – I’ve lost count of how many times I played the viola part in the orchestra (and how many times I lost count in the piece). It’s not hard to see why it’s so often chosen, though – this 1902 concertino, written for the Paris Conservatoire, has a winning combination of easy, sunny grace and playful virtuosity. Recommended recording: Sharon Bezaly (flute); Residentie Orkest den Haag/Neeme Järvi BIS BIS1679 Neil McKim, Production editor Poulenc Sonata for Flute and Piano, FP164 Seven years ago I was lucky to see flautist Emmanuel Pahud and pianist Ashley Wass performing this well-loved Sonata for Flute and Piano by Poulenc at a festival. The delightful piece was written in 1957 (for the Coolidge Foundation) and contains three enchanting movements, beginning with the furtive Allegretto malincolico, followed by the gorgeous Cantilena – with its instantly memorable main melody […]
