Steven Sharp Nelson has written an open letter about the heartbreaking open-country search for Annie Schmidt, daughter of a fellow-member of the Piano Guys: This has been a week I never want to remember, nor forget. My heart is broken in two. I can’t adequately express the anguish I felt as I watched my friend, my brother, run up river, fighting against an ice cold current, shouting his daughter’s name at the stoic river banks on each side—straining his voice above the din of the white water. White noise from rushing water typically calms and lulls the mind. But instead, for us, it stirred up intense anxiety. A panicked helplessness. No one should ever have to feel this way. Especially a father desperately searching for his daughter. Our search started on trails but quickly transitioned off trail, where we soaked ourselves in rain-encumbered underbrush — often above our waists. Many scaled […]

[…] and piano. One conforms to age-old counterpart canon and musical theory, while the other is conveyed via verse/chorus pop song parlance.” They continued, “However, they share the same fundamental feeling — ‘Lacrimosa’ (meaning ‘weeping’ or ‘tearful’) mournfully bemoans spiritual death, while ‘Hello’ gripes about relationship regrets. Different centuries. Different realms. Same emotion. Perhaps we aren’t as far from our predecessors as we think we are.” “Chello” (or “Hellocrimosa,” the alternate title) is performed by Steven Sharp Nelson on electric and acoustic cellos, with Al van der Beek on percussion and vocal textures. The Piano Guys

For those not familiar with them, they are a group of five guys from Utah. Some of the five are videographers and sound engineers, spending most of their time behind the scenes while the two frontrunners, pianist Jon Schmidt and cellist Steven Sharp Nelson. Schmidt and Neslon, with the help of the three other Piano Guys, became a You Tube sensation after creating videos where they performed classical music and pop songs integrated into their own arrangement. Schmidt and Neslon are both classically trained musicians of incredible talent, as evidenced by their impressive knowledge and performance of classical music—from Beethoven to Vivaldi. But rather than film another performance of Faure’s Pavane or Pachelbel’s Canon, The Piano […]

Steven Sharp Nelson has provided the soundtrack to my dissertation writing for a while now, and his newest video does not disappoint. Kung Fu Piano: Cello Ascends, is beautiful. Piano and Cello. Yin and Yang. The perfect combination to write by. This video also reminds me of Master Oogway and his wonderful words of wisdom for Po: Quit, don’t quit. Noodles, don’t noodles. You are too concerned about what was and what will be. There is a saying: Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the “present.” Back to making my final round of dissertation edits. The defense date has been scheduled and is on the books at UK. Almost there! A.
