This morning I received a press release relating to the 8th annual Johannesburg International Mozart Festival (JIMF). Maestro Richard Cock As usual, the JIMF starts two popular Viennese New Year Concerts conducted by Richard Cock on 23 and 24 January 2016. Joburg Ballet and vocal soloists, Magdalene Minaar (soprano) and Stéfan Louw (tenor) will be featured. The theme this year is ‘Alla Turca’ (‘In the Turkish style’). This year’s Mozart Festival reflects the influence of oriental and exotic styles in a huge variety of composers from Mozart to the present day. The Composer-in-Residence for 2016 is Peter Louis van Dijk who was born in Holland and is now living in Port Elizabeth. Audiences will hear a work by Van Dijk […]

For me the test of a good evening at the Symphony concert is if I feel invigorated and contented at the end of the evening. I certainly did feel this way. I’m looking forward to the next three weeks. Next week we get to hear Stefan Louw and his newly formed Big Wig Opera Company. I have been following Stefan Louw for quite a while and I can recommend this concert based purely on what I know of his past productions. Stefan Louw When I first started writing reviews a very senior journalist pointed out to me that things like parking and the bar were not properly part of a review. I simply smiled and nodded. They are, in […]
