BIS-2496 SACD This recording of Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, a work for which to provoke public interest the organizer of the first public performances, an impresario named Emil Gutman dubbed “Symphony of a Thousand,” was made at the occasion of the final concert in the 19-year tenure of Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä (b. 1953) as music director of the Minnesota Orchestra. He is now music director laureate, with Danish conductor Thomas Søndergård (b. 1969) succeeding him as music director. 2019 Summer Festival - Music of the Old World Music of the Old World, July 24 to August 4, 2019. San Luis Obispo County, California Five hundred years ago, the music of Spain became influenced by the Middle Eastern peoples who settled on the Iberian peninsula. This influence then began to permeate early Western classical music. This is most clear in the music of Domenico Scarlatti, who traveled from Italy to serve the Queen of Spain during the early 18th century, composing an astounding 555 keyboard sonatas. These sonatas merged the ethnic sounds and rhythms that had infused the music of Spain, while adapting the Spanish guitar sound to Scarlatti's Italian Baroque sensitivity. Scarlatti's interpretation of these old world elements inspired composers of later eras, including Brahms and Chopin. ALERT: Just a reminder that UW-Madison professor and Pro Arte Quartet cellist Parry Karp will repeat his recent program with pianist Eli Kalman this Sunday afternoon during “Sunday Afternoon Live From the Chazen.” The FREE concert starts at 12:30 p.m. in the Brittingham Gallery 3. The program includes sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven and Cesar Franck plus preludes by Sulkan Tsintsadze. The recital can also be streamed LIVE.
