Sher on this shining night
Bartlett Sher’s “new to Chicago” production of Romeo et Juliette came to the Lyric Opera at Monday’s opening after appearances at Salzburg and Milan. For most of the evening, the production worked quite well, moving the iconic star-crossed lovers to 18th century Venice. Musically, however, the evening was a decidedly mixed bag. Sher’s production kept the action fast-paced and filled the stage with Catherine Zuber’s stylish, colorful, and attractive costumes (the one exception being Juliette’s frothy ball gown, looking for all the world like Bjork’s famous “swan dress”, only in pink). Michael Yeargan’s grey structural set loomed over the action, creating a sense of claustrophobic danger that illuminated the hatred between the Capulets and Montagues under Jennifer Tipton’s moody lighting. The most interesting prop was a huge, flowing piece of white cloth which transformed into the nuptial bed, Juliette’s bedroom, and then Juliette wrapped it around herself to create […]

Anglais - Operalia Contest 2015
In 1993, just twenty years ago, Plácido Domingo sponsored the first edition of the Operalia competition (then presented as “the Olympic Games of Opera”) with a mighty ambition: first, to demonstrate that “opera is a living art that will never die” by focusing on “young performers of all stripes” and, then, to discover this new generation of young lyric talents (voice as well as stage and theatrical interpretations) to better contribute to boosting their careers – the reason that the competition’s jury is composed of veteran performers sharing their professional experience, but also set designers and artistic directors who, in the years to come, will hire the participants who most distinguish themselves during the competition. And for more than twenty years, Operalia has manifestly achieved its goal, as the competition has awarded dozens of performers, like Nina Stemme and Inva Mulla at the first edition in 1993, or later Rolando Villazón and Sonya Yoncheva, Joyce Di Donato, or more […]

MIMC Day 2: Korean Tenor Kim Wins 2015 MIMC
By Wah Keung Chan Photo: Antoine Saito The second night of the Finals of the 2015 Montreal International Musical Competition began with the anticipated Canadian soprano France Bellemare, whose semifinal performance of Dvorak's Song to the Moon reminded me of 2007 MIMC winner, Canadian soprano Marianne Fiset’s simple regal stature. Unfortunately, Bellemare was plagued by strained high notes as she has a tendency of lifting her head and tilting it to the right to sing anything above a high F as she did in “Je dis que rien ne m’épouvante” from Bizet’s Carmen and “Porgi amor” from Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. It would not be worth mentioning but the mannerism produced strident “old lady” high notes, which detracted from her musical line and characterization. In her middle range when she kept her head looking forward, she produced lovely round tones that she showed off in Mimi’s […]
