The Hills Are Alive with the Sound of Muzak
[…] as Intendant of Frankfurt Opera. Gladly, a new Ring cycle comes round in 2021 with Das Rheingold staged by the German mezzo-soprano opera-singer and stage director, Brigitte Fassbaender, whom from 1999 to 2012 was Intendant of the Tyrolean State Theatre at Innsbruck. Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung follow in subsequent years with the full cycle coming together in 2024.Surrounded by mountains, pastureland and those lovely traditionally-built Alpine wooden houses, the Festspielhaus (largely funded by the Haselsteiner Family Private Foundation who covered the lion’s share of the building costs of 36 million euros) stands proud within the natural environment of the area while its bold and striking black façade, comprising a host of geometrical fibre-cement panels, is seen in stark contrast to the white-painted Corbusier-style curved façade of the Passionspielhaus. The setting mirrors the same naturalism and beauty that one encounters at Bayreuth therefore it’s no wonder that the cultural fraternity of […]

Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen, Tiroler Festpiele Erl (Austria)
[…] Designed by the well-appointed Vienna-based architectural firm of Delugan Meiss, the venue opened its doors to the public in 2012 and offers seating for 732 complementing well the architecture of its close neighbour while the Passionspielhaus, constructed mainly in wood with a pre-stressed concrete stage area, has a seating capacity of 1500. Without doubt, though, it’s a lovely and welcoming environment in which to enjoy the Ring and mirrors the same naturalism […]

A new Festspielhaus for Erl
With the guiding example of Robert Schuller’s Passionsspielhaus next door, the pressure to deliver an equally impressive Festspielhaus is immense. Yet, like the festival’s musical objectives, these plans are in capable hands. Supported to the tune of €8 million each from the Tyrolean authorities and the State of Austria, the sizeable €20 million donation has been given by the Haselsteiner Family Foundation. Dark, radical and angular, Vienna-based architects Delugan Meissl have conceived a building that nevertheless blends seamlessly with the surrounding area and Schuller’s architectural icon. Such is the sensitivity with which the theatre has been designed that, during the summer, when Schuller’s original building is the focus of visitors’ attention, the new charcoal-coloured shell will merge with the surrounding forestry. In the winter, when Erl is clad in snow, the new theatre will stand out against a white backdrop. Inside, predominantly muted colours and wood make for a contrastingly warm […]
