Boston jazz guitarist Eric Hofbauer's quintet has two new CDs out, playing 20th-century classics. One is the year's second jazz version of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring , following the Bad Plus' trio version.

Another victim of director Blin’s misjudged comic sense was Jason McStoots, whose fine tenor was misused for hammy and unfunny shtick. The curtain rose on a view of Tabarco’s wiggling rear end and it was downhill from there. Because of complications with U.S. visa service, the wonderful Argentine soprano Veronica Cangemi was denied entry, leaving Ulrike Hofbauer to take on the title role with short notice. Hofbauer’s singing was expressive and polished, especially in “Geloso tormento” and other slow pieces, but she was often underpowered and lacked the brilliance required of the virtuosic “Kochet ihr Adern.” As Edilia, soprano Amanda Forsythe also delivered coloratura dutifully but without incisiveness or energy.
