April 5, 2016 brings our final piano concert of the season as well as our final contemporary classics instalment this year. Dr. Edward Turgeon and Dr. Anne Louise-Turgeon are the married pianists who form Duo Turgeon. The Duo is Algoma University’s Artist-In-Residence and individually they both teach at the Algoma Conservatory and at Algoma University. Previously they were on the faculty and ensemble-in- residence at Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters in Boca Raton, Florida. Anne is originally from Montreal and Edward from Toronto. They have played together since 1988, moving to the professional side of performance as a duo in 1994. Gavrilin - Russian Notebook and other songs (Mila Shkirtil | Yuri Serov)
I decided to continue sharing "Nothern Flowers" CDs with a series of vocal cycles recordings, performed by splendid duet of Mila Shkirtil and Youri Serov. I'd like to start with Valery Gavrilin songs. Gavrilin worked in the style of neo-romantism and had a unique melodic gift. The basis of the most of his compositions is Russian traditional songs - such is vocal cycle "Russian Notebook". He was composed when Gavrilin was only 25 and immediately brought him fame. In the aspect of an appeal to the Russian folk songs he could be compared with famous Georgy Sviridov, who very much appreciated Gavrilin's talent.
