Nicola Vicentino, 2022
[…] as he became the music tutor to the family of the Duke Ercole II and some of his music was performed at the court. In 1546 a book of his madrigals was published in Venice. Sometime later he followed Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este, the second son of Duke Alfonso I d'Este, Ercole’s brother, and the infamous Lucrezia Borgia, to Rome. There, in 1551, a famous debate took place between Vicentino and the Portuguese musician Vicente Lusitano. The debate centered on different interpretations of historical tuning systems with references to the ancient Greek music. It’s too esoteric for us to follow but the idea that such a musical debate could generate interest comparable to that of a Grammy pop-album winner of today is remarkable in itself. Vicentino lost the debate, which was formally judged by several professional musicians, but that didn’t stop him from writing an influential musical treatise and practically […]

However, his music had an enormous reptutation and influence […]

Hooray for summer! Hooray for BBC Proms! Hooray for Royal Albert Hall! Tony Cooper reports on this year’s musical extravaganza
[…] Stravinsky, the Aurora Orchestra tackles its most ambitious challenge yet by performing the 1945 suite from The Firebird from memory while Sir Simon Rattle will lead the London Symphony Orchestra in a programme devoted solely to Stravinsky. Building on a musical magpie, Stravinsky’s reputation for drawing on the music of the past, a focus on composers who have copied, borrowed and quoted from each other runs throughout the festival. Therefore, from Josquin des Prez and Lusitano to Respighi, Nico Muhly and Shiva Feshareki, the Proms range of works this year spans five centuries that look to the past for their inspiration. Other composer anniversaries being marked include Thomas Adès, Ruth Gipps, Astor Piazzolla, Ariel Ramírez, Robert Simpson, Pauline Viardot and Alexander von Zemlinsky as well as Malcolm Arnold in his centenary year. And the well-loved Monday lunchtime chamber-music series - Proms at Cadogan Hall - returns for six concerts featuring […]
