To boldly go: Daniel Pioro and the Marian Consort in music for violin and voices by Tom Coult, Nick Martin and Bach
[…] the music and there was certainly nothing sedate about his playing, often going at it and giving us some stupendous passagework. This was a fascinating and somewhat experimental programme, and it is wonderful that Wigmore Hall is able to give Pioro the space to explore in this way. The music, whether old or new, will never be mainstream in this form yet this was a wonderfully thought-provoking evening. The Marian Consort (Caroline Halls, Alexandra Kidgell, Sarah Anne Champion, Rory McCleery, Will Wright, Benjamin Durrant, Jon Stainsby, Thomas Lowen)Never miss out on future posts by following usThe blog is free, but I'd be delighted if you were to show your appreciation by buying me a coffee.Elsewhere on this blogSong belongs to us all & should be available to all: artistic director, Joseph Middleton on Leeds Lieder's boldest & most colourful festival yet - interview The Ring and more in BerlinA brilliant programme: Sibelius, Prokofiev & Saariaho with Jan Lisiecki, […]

In fact, the concert opened with Ciel d’hiver. And being not too familiar with Saariaho’s music, I soon discovered that she was a prolific and futuristic writer who penned a trio of […]

Classical home listening: Elisabeth Lutyens Piano Works; Tchaikovsky and Korngold string sextets and more

So many aspects of her life now look dated: she was a British aristocrat (daughter of the architect Sir Edwin Lutyens) who moved in elite social circles, cared little about the opinions of others, embraced European modernism ahead of her time, smoked and drank heavily and had a reputation for being fierce musically, and verbally prickly to lesser mortals.
