Tauno Hannikainen: Sibelius Symphony No.5 & Karelia Suite
Jean Sibelius01. - 03. Symphony No.5 in E-flat major, op.82 [29'20]04. Karelia Suite, op.11 [15'10]Sinfonia of London conducted by Tauno HannikainenWorld Record Club T42 (recording date unknown; issued on LP in 1959)(flacs, LP rip, LP cover and sleeve-back scans)Here are two more fine performances of major works by Sibelius which have been rather overlooked in the digital era. These are not my rips (many thanks to the original ripper and uploader) and I am not at all sure of their provenance. Glazunov) [4'14]Tossy Spivakovsky- violin, London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Walter GoehrEverest SDBR 3049 (recorded November 1959; LP issued October 1960; digital download 2006)(digital downloads, 16bit/44.1kHz flacs, booklet and cover scans)Recording venue: Walthamstow Assembly Hall, LondonRecording engineers: Aaron Nathanson & Bert Whyte; Producer: Bert WhyteThis is the last issue from my collection of Everest digital remasters (this one from Countdown Media) that I am able to post here. I also have the excellent Eugene Goossens/London Symphony recording of Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances but that was from a private group. As mentioned in my earlier post of the altogether superior Spivakovsky recording of the Sibelius Violin Concerto made at the same time (but with Tauno Hannikainen as conductor), this is rather less successful to my ears but it is a notable performance in […]
