Columbia/Legacy CK64935 In a couple of recent posts I have shared some thoughts by jazz musicians concerning the influence of classical music on jazz (you can find those posts here and here). In his new book, 3 Shades of Blue, James Kaplan tells the interlocking life stories of three key figures in jazz: trumpeter Miles Davis, saxophonist John Coltrane, and pianist Bill Evans. Those with even a passing knowledge of jazz history are no doubt familiar with at least one of those three names, while those with a bit more knowledge will likely recall […]

Indiana University: Black cast and director bring revered Black composer's opera to life [William Grant Still's "Highway 1, USA"]
[…] Earlier in February, the Jacobs School of Music paid tribute to this visionary composer with a production of "Highway 1, USA," an opera created by Still. Performed by a primarily Black cast and directed by Kimille Howard, assistant stage director with the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, the three-act opera was preceded by "19," a ballet set to music from Still's "Afro-American Symphony" and choreographed by Sasha Janes, associate professor of music (ballet) at Jacobs. Still was the first Black composer to conduct his own work as it was performed by a major American orchestra. Though highly accomplished, his career did not come without the hurdles of racism. He composed music for the 1939 World's Fair in New York City, which he could only attend safely with the help of a police escort except on "Negro […]

OperaBallet.Indiana.edu: An Evening of William Grant Still: "Highway 1, USA" and "19," a ballet choreographed by Sasha Janes [Feb. 4 & 5 livestreamed 7:30 PM ET]
An Evening of William Grant Still Music by W. G. Still “Still's voice may be more relevant today than ever before.” HOUSTON SYMPHONY The Still of the evening. Shattering color barriers in classical music with a string of firsts, William Grant Still became known as the “Dean of African American Composers.” First, a deathbed promise fuels an emotional explosion at a small-town gas station on the seemingly tranquil Highway 1 in this intimate opera about human thresholds. Then, ballet meets home life in times of quarantine, capturing the surreal state of a global pandemic. Created to music from Still’s Afro-American Symphony, this finalized version of Jacobs’ 2020 Fall Ballet includes the third section of Sasha Janes’ work, as dancers are once again allowed freedom of movement. In English with English supertitles. 2022 Performances Feb. 4, 5, 11, 12Musical Arts Center 7:30 PM Feb. 4, 57:30 PM ET […]
