Dangerous liaisons
[…] superb, moving projections. Costume designer Constance Hoffman does lovely work, especially with the embassy guests and with Roxane’s shimmering blue gown. And finally, Stage Director Kevin Newbury has done a superb job in this extremely complicated staging. There are almost always dozens of characters on the stage, and everyone clearly knows their movement pattern and their character’s purpose. Newbury’s clear and insightful direction keeps the story moving fluidly and keeps the dramatic tension taut. Nick Sandys’ fight direction is also excellent. The physical reactions of the shooting victims are shockingly realistic. I think this is finally a contemporary opera with “legs.” Rumor has it that it will be recorded for PBS’s Great Performances series. I am anxious to experience this fine work again.

Hell on wheels
[…] ease as the music jumps from octave to octave without transition. Brindley Sherratt has something of a John Carradine profile as the cruel Doctor, and sings with authority. David Portillo’s Andres starts a bit underpowered, but grows in vocalism as the opera moves along. His is a very sweet tenor, a splendid David in Lyric’s most recent Meistersinger. Stefan Vinke is a bearish and brutish Drum Major, singing with confidence; only his execution of Nick Sandys’ fight choreography in the barracks brawl does he fall short of the mark. Special mention must be made of Jill Grove’s creepy Margaret and Brenton Ryan’s snakelike movement and pure singing as the Fool, teasing and tormenting the desperate Wozzeck. And Wozzeck’s son, played brilliantly by child actor Zachary Uzarraga, provides an overwhelming image at the very end of the opera, perhaps McVicar’s finest moment. After the children have told him of his mother’s […]
