A Lionel Tertis Celebration: Timothy Ridout, Frank Dupree, James Baillieu; Harmonia Mundi
A Lionel Tertis Celebration - York Bowen, Rebecca Clarke, Vaughan Williams, Lionel Tertis, Frank Bridge, Brahms, Schumann, Faure, William Wolstenholme, Kreisler, W.H. Reed, Eric Coates, Cecil Forsyth, John Ireland, and Mendelssohn; Timothy Ridout, Frank Dupree, James Baillieu; Harmonia Mundi12 February 2024Timothy Ridout's warm tribute to Lionel Tertis moves between powerful dramatic utterance and more domesticated, salon pieces, with every piece in a finely judged performanceInspired by the supple violin playing of Fritz Kreisler, though entirely self-taught, Lionel Tertis (1876-1975) made it his mission to bring the viola back to the foreground in classical music. In order to create a repertoire, Tertis adapted existing material (famously creating a viola concerto from Elgar's Cello Concerto, see my review of Ridout's 2023 recording of this), as well as badgering composers for pieces. Like other such figures (his friend the cellist Pablo Casals, and the guitarist Segovia), Tertis' taste in music was relatively conservative and famously […]

The Heath Quartet gave the work's premiere in August 2021 at New Mexico Museum of Art. Around Grime's new work, the quartet had assembled an eclectic and diverse programme beginning with Haydn's String Quartet in E flat from the group of quartets written in Vienna in 1790 by a […]

The TRUMPETS shall sound! FANFARE 250 for the Fine City of Norwich
[…] attraction that the city has never experienced before. Comprising 7500 grey-coated aerated concrete blocks, supplied by locally based Norwich company, Longwater Construction, the line of dominoes traversed the city covering a route of 2.2km. Although they took the best part of the day to assemble, they were toppled within a relatively short period of time - 25 minutes. Blow me down! Crowds gathered at The Halls, Norwich for Dominoes (Photo: Kate Wolstenholme, from Norwich Evening News) The trail started at Anglia Square (Magdalen Street) and finished at The Forum (city centre) with three large domino-tower structures erected at both ends of the trail with another at St Andrew’s (Hall) Plain in the middle. And as part of their long and adventurous journey the ‘line’ also went ‘indoors’, for instance, through the bar/restaurant area of Norwich’s arts cinema, Cinema City, as well as through the nave […]
