Cleveland calls in former winner to head its piano competition
Message from Yaron Kohlberg: I am thrilled to announce that I have been appointed the new President/CEO of the Cleveland International Piano Competition! This is a great moment in my professional life, and I feel extremely honored and grateful. Since being founded in 1975, the CIPC has established itself as one of the leading […]

Grand Theatre, Leeds Opera North’s music director Aleksandar Markovic makes a memorably incisive debut in this compelling and admirably cast productionFor an opera about the fading evanescence of youth, it’s not insignificant that David McVicar’s production of Strauss’s most opulent creation is already a distant memory at Opera North, where it was last seen 14 years ago. Almost long enough for any male offspring of Octavian’s affair with the Marschallin to be thinking about seducing an older woman of his own. The revival is eloquently staged by Elaine Tyler-Hall and very satisfyingly cast. The Swedish soprano Ylva Kohlberg rather belies the Marschallin’s concern that she is turning into an old woman, but her first act meditation remains the most poignant expression of menopausal ennui set to music. Fflur Wyn has a delightfully diaphanous tone as Sophie, and Helen Sherman’s Octavian sounds as dashing as he/she looks. Henry Waddington’s rotundly sung, bellicose […]

Steinway’s New Owners See Expanded Market Potential
Even though the classical music economic climate might look chilly to some observers, it seems that forecast doesn’t extend to the luxury piano market where a private equity firm, Kohlberg & Company, recently purchased Steinway & Sons for $438 million. Although there was some reasonable trepidation from musicians and classical music presenters over the announcement, it appears that the new owners are actually looking to expand production and maintain existing quality standards. An article by Corinne Ramey in the 7/11/2013 edition of the Wall Street Journal examines the sale in closer detail and includes a bit of reference content from me about the turnaround time for realizing gains in expanding the master piano maker workforce and pushing into Eastern European and Asian markets. In short, Steinway’s new owners have a bit of time before realizing the fruits of investing in expanded production so concerns over the purchase […]

Steinway and Sons is sold, and the digitals are probably having a party
http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2013/07/01/steinway-sold-to-private-equity-firm-for-438-million/ It was no surprise to read about Steinway selling out to Kohlberg and Company .. Why? because, 1) who has the money to buy a pricey grand 2) Digitals are turning acoustics into dinosaurs. If I were purist and dismissed all my students who had electronics, I’d be catapulted into bankruptcy. In all candor, I use my Yamaha Arius 141 as my back-up to two closely-spaced Steinway pianos that eat up most of my living area. Add in the kitchen-placed digital, and I have nowhere to sleep and eat. In the past few years I’ve down-sized from 3,000 square feet, to 1300 to about 700. Do the math. Still, I would rather sleep under the piano, than have it replaced with a fancy, free-standing digital console, even a pricey, glitzy one that’s advertised as a real piano equivalent plus! (Don’t believe it) But […]
