Lisbon under Ashes - rediscovered Portuguese Baroque
[…] Anarda is a sonnet by Manuel Botelho de Oliveira (1636-1711) one of the pioneersof Brazilian literature, taken from a book published in Lisbon in 1705. The original music is lost, so here it is used with a Frejch melody of the period. Another interesting combination is the Passacalha da triste vida, an anonymous 16th century villancico paired wuith a passacaglia from an opera from the time of Monteverdi. The oldest piece in this collection is Toda noite e todo dia, from a songbook compiled in the 16th century , discovered in Elvas in 1928. The text deals with impossible love "Que do que não traz provieto, Lança mão a fantasia" (What does not bring benefit gives way to fantasy) The lovely soprano line elides over jaunty rhythmic strings, and then is joined by the tenor, singing alongside, not in duet. As an opener, this work was easily a solid choice, both for being underperformed and as a showcase of a group’s coloristic potential. The new cello concerto came from Eureka Ensemble’s composer in residence, Boston-based Stephanie Ann Boyd. Performed by co-founder and executive director Alan Toda-Ambaras, the work is heavily inspired by Italian Modernist architecture drawings as well as Toda-Ambaras’s Japanese heritage; both aspects are manifested in the title Tekton, Greek for “architecture”. Each movement is named after the Japanese words for the different states of water, clouds, ice, and vapor (kumo, aiku, joki), which the cello explores via its multitude of colors. Last week, during the broadcast of A Toda Máquina on the Televísa network’s station in Ciudad Juárez, Enrique Tovar rubbed against his colleague Tania Reza, fondled her breasts, tried to lift her skirt, and made numerous lewd comments.
