Premiere of Lou Harrison’s Concerto for Pipa and String OrchestraWu Man, “the world’s finest player of the pipa” (The New York Times), will make her San Francisco Symphony subscription series debut on Friday, February 11 and Saturday, February 12 at 7:30 p.m. PT as the soloist in Lou Harrison’s Concerto for Pipa and String Orchestra. It will be the first performance of the concerto by the San Francisco Symphony, one of five SF Symphony premieres on the program that includes works by Texu Kim, Younghi Pagh-Paan, Takashi Yoshimatsu, and Zhou Long.Mr. Harrison (1917-2003) composed the concerto for Wu Man in 1997. It was the first concerto for the pipa--a lute-like instrument with a history of more than two thousand years--by a western composer and the last large-scale work Mr. Harrison composed before his death. It has been a core part of Ms. Wu’s repertoire since she premiered it with Dennis […]

Whoa: San Francisco Symphony, 2021-22
Esa-Pekka Salonen Music Director of SFS Photo by Minna Hatinen, courtesy of San Francisco Symphony The SFS home page currently has a beautiful rotating series of photos of Salonen conducting. This is one of them, made available to the press as part of the press kit. I will post more later today, but after a quick look at the press release for the upcoming SFS season, I have nothing to complain about. With the riches on offer, I can live without a visit from Susanna Mälkki, a favorite of mine, this year. Maybe I'll catch her in LA. There are a ton of premieres of various kinds, a great lineup of visiting artists, and a lot of music by folks whose music we haven't heard here before. (You might remember me complaining about this, especially during the season when there were more works by MTT programmed than works in total […]

Once upon a Time in Darmstadt # 5 - 20 Ans de Musique Contemporaine à Metz
Our survey on the great era of Contemporary Music in Darmstadt is coming to an end with a remarkable compilation of documents taken at another important Festival of the time: the Rencontres internationales de musique contemporaine de Metz. This important Festival ran for 20 years (1972-1992) and featured a series of concerts, lectures and meet-the-composer events. All of the prominent figures of the Darmstadt School took part in the Festival, and these excellent recordings provide a rare testament of some modern masterpieces: from Boulez to Maderna, from Feldman to Nono, from Xenakis to Kagel and more, this selection (laudably assembled by German label Col Legno in 1992) is a treasure trove for any fan of what used to be called avant-garde, Neue Musik or experimental, and today is duly and simply considered as true classics of the Western Music repertoire.
