Last weekend (29 to 31 January 2021) was the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch. Pianist Matthew Schellhorn created this lovely video for it, in collaboration with young artists who created images of Robins. Schellhorn plays Olivier Messiaen's Le Rouge-gorge (Robin) with images created by pupils of Myatt Garden Primary School. Olivier Messiaen (1908–92) wrote numerous pieces inspired by birdsong. Le Rouge-gorge comes from a collection written in 1985 called Petites esquisses d’oiseaux (Small Bird Sketches) and apart from the Robin features the Blackbird, the Song Thrush and the Skylark. The work was dedicated to the composer’s wife, Yvonne Loriod, with whom Matthew Schellhorn studied in Paris.

Jean Marchand was in the hall at the time. "I have fond memories of it!“ he recalls.Visions cosmiques will continue with Denis Gougeon's Schubertian-accented work Andante Sostenuto, created by the long-time duo in 2015. The critics were unanimous in their praise, and Lucie Renaud declared it to be "a piece of exquisite slowness and meditative orientation,” in her blog le Clavier Bien Tempéré.Finally, Bechara El-Khoury's Sonate pour piano […]
