René Jacobs and the B’Rock Orchestra fizz in youthful Schubert. Plus, the complete works of a Renaissance eccentric • Schubert wrote his first five symphonies in his teens, youthful works without the poignancy and majesty of the Unfinished (No 8) or the “Great” C Major (No 9) yet hinting at what might come. Stories in music: Roses, Lilies & Other Flowers from The Telling
Gardens of Delight - Ciconia, Hildegard of Bingen, Machaut, Zacara; The Telling; FHR Reviewed by Robert Hugill on 19 December 2018 Star rating: 4.0 (★★★★) Medieval flowers explored in a haunting programme from The TellingMost people familiar with the Brighton Early Music Festival (BREMF) or the Stroud Green Festival will almost certainly have come across The Telling, a edievalM ensemble with a difference, which features soprano Clare Norburn who was co-founder and artistic director of BREMF and is artistic director of the Stroud Green Festival. On this disc, Gardens of Delight from The Telling on FHR, Clare Norburn is joined by Leah Stuttard (medieval harp, frame drum, voice) and Ariane Prussner (voice) for a programme themed around Roses, Lilies & Other Flowers in Medieval Song which means that the ensemble can cast their net widely for a haunting selection of music by Ciconia, Hildegard of Bingen, Machaut, Zacara and more. Giuseppe Verdi and the nexus of music and politics: An interview with author Alberto Nones.
[…] a life in music. It’s wonderful to be able to balance time spent writing about political theory with the very different experience of studying and performing Frédéric Chopin’s Piano Sonata #2, to reference just one example! PLN: What’s happening now? Do you have any major new projects in the works? AN: Currently, I’m teaching political philosophy at the University of Trento, and recently I taught a course on creativity and communication at the University of Teramo. I’m also active as a radio author with RAI, the Italian national TV and radio network . My RAI work has given me the opportunity to write and broadcast cycles of programs on Verdi, Chopin and … The Doors. Yes, The Doors ! I like to approach music from a wide angle and the widest possible perspective. I believe there are no divisions … no sects. Just sounds — […]
