What do new young audiences want from classical music?
[…] innertainment'". Before dismissing 'ceremonial innertainment' as fey pretension, please consider that classical music is rooted in ceremonial conventions defined by concert etiquette and venue, and that there is surely no better example of 'innertainment' than a Mahler symphony. But does art music have to be defined rigidly by conventional classical forces? Much of Jonathan Harvey's music was influenced by what he modestly described as his 'Buddhist tendencies'. In a very thought-provoking talk Amaro Bhikku, a teacher from the Thai Forest Buddhist tradition, explained that we love music "not because we like the sounds themselves, we love music because of the place it takes us to". After the philosopher and pychologist William James sampled nitrous oxide he explained that "Our normal waking consciousness... is but one special type of consciousness, whilst all about it, parted from it by the filmiest of screens, there lie potential forms of consciousness […]

A Life On-Line: Jam today, and full of beans
[…] madrigals and sacred music by Monteverdi, what Robert Hollingworth described as 'comfort food'. Moving between six-voiced unaccompanied madrigals in Monteverdi's earlier style to single voice pieces with theorbo (Linda Sayce) and organ (Robert Hollingworth), the short recital presented us with the full imaginative range of Monteverdi's music from two works from the 1603 Fourth book of madrigals, to Lamento della ninfa from 1638, and along the way there was the lovely Duo seraphin and Felle Amaro a fascinating sacred contrafactum of Cruda Amarilli. Whilst in one way this was small scale performance, each individual was a vibrant part of the whole, thus giving us a vividly rich and emotional experience. If only we could have been there. [LiveFromLondon] JAM on the Marsh has been presenting concerts all week, recorded at the churches in Romney Marsh. We caught mezzo-soprano Rebecca Afonwy-Jones' lovely recital with pianist Anna Tilbrook. They started with Elgar's […]

The Proust Of Portugal (Whom You Likely Haven't Heard Of)
Jose María de Eça de Quierós "established his reputation with his tense and claustrophobic first novel, The Crime of Father Amaro. It is a debut that’s also not one: it was twice seriously revised after publication. (Among other changes, the third edition is almost five times as long as the first.)"

Because she’s happy
[…] the sarcasm of his repeated “Buona fortuna,” sung to each of his dupes in turn, curdled the blood. Mr. Tapp sings as often in musicals as in opera, and his acting chops are well-honed. (Does one hone a chop?) But his excellent voice should not be hidden behind a microphone; he will essay Wotan for OCB. Paul Goodwin-Groen, who looks as imposing as he sounds, was an egregiously menacing Alvise Badoer. Julio Hernandez and Ivan Amaro divvied up the supporting roles and the soloists gamely took on the chorus and offstage parts. Lucas Barkley was the expert and atmospheric pianist. The evening was rich in the sensual pleasure of able singers tearing with into a score whose justification lies in providing delight.
