Like Water for Chocolate review – Christopher Wheeldon’s delectable take on a magic-realist love story
Royal Opera House, LondonWheeldon choreographs Mexican novelist Laura Esquivel’s 1989 tale of food and forbidden passions into a fulfilling ballet full of buoyant movement and visually arresting coups de theatre Not all choreographers are good directors, but Christopher Wheeldon is. Even when dealing with a tricky text such as Laura Esquivel’s magical realist novel Like Water for Chocolate, his is a steady hand. His choreography seems in a telepathic relationship with the melody and mystery of Joby Talbot’s score, while Bob Crowley’s designs, inspired by Mexican architect Luis Barragán, give a sense of heat and isolation, and some visually arresting coups de theatre. In brief, it’s the story of Tita (Francesca Hayward) and Pedro(Marcelino Sambé), who are deeply in love but forbidden to marry – Tita must care for her demanding mother (a fierce Laura Morera, especially when she returns as a ghost). Pedro marries Tita’s sister, as his […]

I’ve been cultivating a love of classical music for decades. It’s an interest that has brought me immense joy – both directly, from the performances and recordings I’ve been fortunate to experience, and indirectly, from the bonds of friendship I’ve formed with the many wonderful people who have helped me explore and grow this passion. But there is a single person who is responsible for planting the seed: my Great Great Aunt Pauline. Pauline, much younger than she was when I knew her. I think she was about 96 when she died in the early ’90s. Pauline Rivoire was my Great Grandmother’s sister. I never knew any of my Great Grandmothers – or any other relations from that generation, for that matter – on EITHER side of my family. My mom came from a big extended family. Both my maternal grandmother and my maternal […]

Luigi Dallapiccola (1904-75) was the leader of the Italian musical avantgarde and had enormous influence on people like Nono and Berio. The Colón, wrongly, hasn´t seen fit not to offer us operas from the latter, but it has given us three of Dallapiccola: "Volo di notte" in 1959 and 1969, "Il prigioniero" in 1954 and 2000, and "Job" in 1964. Now we were presented with the double-bill of "Volo di notte" and "Il prigioniero" in three non-subscription performances. Excellent idea, although with more performances it should have been included in the subscription cycle, which only had seven titles. "Volo di notte" is based on the Saint-Exupéry nouvelle "Vol de nuit", about the nocturnal flights of the pioneer Aéropostale based at an airport near our city; both […]
