Tonight's opera was also part of the Handel Festival. We enjoyed very much our encounter with the opera about 10 years ago at the Met, so were looking forward to this event.Unfortunately the performance didn't have English surtitles, and despite having read the synopsis, having seen the opera before, and having David explain to us the plot, we were quite lost during the close-to-three hours of music and acting. Things on stage do not unfold […]

Prague Music Orchestra – Frantisek Pok, conductor; O. Jelinkova – soprano. May 20, 2018.
Smetana Hall, Municipal Building, Prague. Orchestra B (Seat 21-10, CzK 950). Program – Strauss, Mozart, Dvorak & Opera with Ballet. When we planned this trip we found out, somewhat to our chagrin, that both the opera and concert seasons would be over by the time we come to Prague. That, of course, refers to the major organizations such as the Czech National Symphony or the State Opera (not sure what the actual names are.) Of course in many major European cities there are always concerts and operas going on, some of them designed for tourists and marketed heavily – Vienna is a good example. When it comes to Czeckoslavia (we are of course talking the Czech Republic) the […]

Gil Rose Powers Dvořák’s Grand Opera
[…] relatively small but vital role as Marfa, the widow of Ivan the Terrible, Russian-born Irina Mishura, dramatically affirmed falsely that Dimitrij was in fact her son; in the last act, asked to reaffirm that statement under sacred oath, she wavered in agony. Three major stars of the Czech operatic stage came to Boston to impersonate the three major lengthy and demanding parts, and each contributed greatly to the satisfaction and success of the evening. Olga Jelínková played Xenia, the daughter of Boris Godunov, who lamented the deaths of the rest of her family and felt herself constantly in danger from the supporters of Dimitrij. Her part is half lamenting and half growing into love music, as she realizes that Dimitrij has fallen in love with her and has protected her from her enemies. Her clear soprano voice expressed these two principal aspects of the role effectively. Dana Burešova conjured power […]
