Smetana: Ma Vlast (CD review)
[…] had to choose, I'd still go with Vaclav Neumann (Berlin Classics), Rafael Kubelik (Supraphon), Antal Dorati (Philips or Newton Classics), Paavo Berglund (Warner Classics), Libor Pesek (Virgin Classics), or Antoni Wit (Naxos). Not that I have to choose, and this new entry is surely at least a contender. Producers Jeri Gemrot and Dr. Alexander Buhr and engineers Vaclav Roubai and Karel Soukenik recorded the music during opening concerts at the Prague Spring Festival, Smetana Hall, Municipal House, Prague in May 2014. The result they obtained is mostly good, old-fashioned Decca sound: very clear, very clean, very wide, very big, very compartmentalized, very highlighted, and very one-dimensional. Fortunately, it is also quiet and fairly natural in its tonal response, although a touch hard and glaring in the upper midrange and a little soft and woolly in the mid-bass. Dynamic impact seems a tad muted at times, too, yet quite striking at […]

As I have mentioned on numerous occasions throughout my writing, it has been very difficult to be intentional and consistent in applying my lens to this festival, especially my lens of privilege. But with the news of the US Supreme Court legalizing gay marriage nationwide, and the ramifications this will have on wealth control in America, I was finally able to bring that lens back into focus. Picture this, an international youth orchestra attending a festival in the city of Prague which has a tuition cost of $5750.00. Who do you think would make up the majority of the orchestra, racially speaking? If you guessed a majority Caucasian and some Asian individuals, you would be correct. As I sat in one of the smaller performance halls of the Prague Municipal House listening to the orchestra present a beautiful rendition of Mozart’s Prague Symphony No. 38, I couldn’t help but notice both […]

Looking for Art Nouveau while travelling
[…] had liked to see then. At that exhibition the majority were women and the men sat down and waited until their spouses had seen all. From the exhibition “Bijoux” from Paris. René Lalique (Its the other way round seeing Space or science museums or at least museums on tanks.) In Prague you can stay at a real Art Nouveau style hotel in the city centre and walk a few minutes to their old Municipal House where every detail is made in the style. You can see it all if you obey the strict commands of the guides. ” Don´t sit down, don´t touch anything!” and it is understandable that it would be warn out quickly with the huge amount of visitors. #gallery-358-8 { margin: auto; } #gallery-358-8 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-358-8 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } […]

Weekly Photo Challenge: Threshold
Musicians of the Prague Symphony Orchestra FOK are preparing for a concert in the Smetana Hall of Municipal House in Prague. Taken about 30 minutes before the concert’s beginning through the big glass concert hall door (hence the empty seats and dimmed lights) through which we were going to be let into the hall to enjoy the beautiful musical event. So the standpoint for this photograph is on an actual THRESHOLD of a great cultural experience. And the concert itself was marvelous and lots of fun, indeed!
