Exploration: Schubert, Blahetka, Beethoven, Borne; Noémi Győri, Suzana Bartal; HUNGOROTONTo the Northern Star: Johan Helmich Roman; Flauguissimo and friends; RESONUSReviewed 7 November 2023Two imaginatively different approaches to expanding the flute repertoire. From Hungary comes a disc that explores lesser known Beethoven and Schubert alongside a rarity and familiar showpiece, whilst from the UK comes a disc exploring an 18th-century London-trained Swedish composer writing music of great eleganceThe flute was a popular instrument in the 18th and 19th centuries with plenty of fine players and a wide array of repertoire, much of it however aimed at the domestic market. What flute players lack are the pieces of the stature of, say, Mozart and Brahms' works for clarinet. This means that players need to be a bit more creative, to explore the highways and byways. Two discs came to my attention this year, both exploring repertoire that is not always obvious. On Exploration […]

Beautiful Music in Beautiful Places: The Lammermuir Festival returns with 35 live performances across 16 historic venues in East Lothian
Haddington - St Mary's Parish Church (Photo Robin Mitchell)The Lammermuir Festival's tagline is Beautiful Music in Beautiful Places and this year's festival, which runs from 8 to 19 September 2022, certainly proves that. The festival is offering 35 live performances across 16 historic venues in East Lothian and alongside festival favourites such as Holy Trinity Church and St Mary's Parish Church in Haddington, there are new venues such as The Big Shed near Musselburgh, North Esk Parish Church, Sancta Maria Abbey at Nunraw, and Dunglass Collegiate Church.Scottish Opera will be giving what is thought to be the Scottish premiere of Massenet's 1907 opera Thérèse in a semi-staged performance at St. Mary’s Parish Church, Haddington, conducted by Anu Tali with mezzo-soprano Justina Gringytė in the title role. Set during the French Revolution, the opera is a rare excursion into more Verismo territory than usual for Massenet. The title role was written for the mezzo-soprano Lucy Arbell who created […]

Noye's Fludde at Holy Trinity Church, Sloane Street
Britten's Noye's Fludde was premiered at the 1958 Aldeburgh Festival. Based on the story of Noah's Ark from the 15th century Chester Mystery Plays, the piece was designed to be performed by largely amateur ensemble mainly of children and was intended for churches and large halls, rather than the theatre. Centenaries and special occasions apart however, it doesn't pop up very often and so it is delightful that William Vann will be conducting Noye's Fludde at Holy Trinity Church, Sloane Street on Friday 17th June 2022. Vann will be conducting the London Mozart Players with the combined choirs of Christ Church and Holy Trinity Schools, Trinity Boys School and Old Palace School, plus Pimlico Recorder Group and Alex Ashworth as Noye and Kate Symonds-Joy as Mrs Noye. As well as regular instruments in the orchestra, the child percussionists, led by a professional timpanist, play various exotic and invented percussion instruments, including sandpaper […]
