Peter Selwyn One of my local orchestras, the Lambeth Orchestra, is celebrating its 50th anniversary and will shortly be announcing its celebratory 2022/23 season. The orchestra, founded in 1972 and under the direction of Dr Christopher Fifield since 1982, is one of London's foremost amateur orchestras. But besides all this, there is other big news. Peter Selwyn has been appointed the orchestra's new principal conductor and he conducts the orchestra on 9 April 2022 in a programme that includes Dvorak's Symphonic Variations and RVW's A London Symphony and music by Ravel at All Saints' Church, West Dulwich. Peter Selwyn is a local boy and first heard the orchestra when he attended concerts with his parents. He has since gone on to be Kapellmeister and Head of Music at the Staatstheater Nürnberg as well as included three seasons at Bayreuth as assistant to Adam Fischer and Giuseppe Sinopoli. Most recently we heard Peter […]

Applications invited for the 2022 Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg competition
It was inevitable, I suppose, that singing competition launched in 2016 by Staatstheater Nürnberg would be called Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg! Running every two years, 2022 will see the third edition of the competition and applications are now open with an international jury to be chaired by the distinguished tenor Siegfried Jerusalem. The focus of the 2022 competition is on the lower vocal ranges, with a special prize to be awarded for the lower vocal ranges Alto and Bass, as well as the Young Artist Prize. Singers that already have some professional experience or are enrolled students at a conservatoire are invited to apply by 31 January 2022. In previous competitions, more than 700 singers applied and over half were heard live in preliminary rounds. For 2022, procedures will be somewhat different, with preliminary rounds being done via submitted recordings. The final three rounds of the competition (preliminary round, semi-final, final) will take place in […]

Bringing audiences into closer contact with the poetry: tenor Ilker Arcayürek on the art of the song recital and his new disc of Schubert songs
[…] former BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, Ilker Arcayürek has not alwayshad an obvious path to a career as a tenor. He was born in Istanbul and brought up in Vienna from the age of five, and though he did not attend university or conservatoire, he was a member of the studio of Zürich Opera from 2009 to 2013 and went on to be a member of the ensemble of the Stadttheater Klagenfurt (2013-2015) and Staatstheater Nürnberg (2015-18). We met up via Zoom to chat about his new disc, about song as an art-form and about making recital programmes. Ilker Arcayürek (Photo Gillian Riesen) When I ask Ilker why return to Schubert for the latest disc, he laughs and says why not. He sees the new disc as very much a follow-up to that first disc. The Champs Hill disc was his debut recording, and he […]
