Der Werdegang eines Wüstlings" - diese Serie von acht satirisch-gesellschaftskritischen Kupferstichen des englischen Zeichners William Hogarth hat Igor Strawinsky zur Komposition seiner einzigen abendfüllenden Oper "The Rake's Progress" inspiriert. Gemeinsam mit den Librettisten Auden und Kallman schuf Strawinsky eine mit bösem, schwarzen Humor gespickte Komödie, die episodisch die zweifelhafte Karriere eines durch Erbschaft wohlhabend gewordenen Tunichtguts erzählt. Der Regisseur Martin Kušej inszeniert das Stück radikal zeitgenössisch; er nimmt sich Tom Rakewells Sehnsucht nach Reichtum und Berühmtheit vor und zeigt, wie Tom schliesslich an seinem naiven Glauben an das schnelle Glück zugrunde geht - und dabei von den Massenmedien gnadenlos ausgebeutet wird. Thomas Adès, einer der bedeutendsten Komponisten unserer Zeit, steht am Pult des Orchesters der Oper Zürich. Er ist kurzfristig für Nikolaus Harnoncourt eingesprungen, der aus gesundheitlichen Gründen leider absagen musste. Adès, der sowohl als Dirigent wie auch als Pianist hoch geschätzt wird, arbeitet regelmässig mit den führenden Orchestern, Opernhäusern und Festivals der Welt zusammen. Er dirigierte Strawinskys „The Rakes Progress" letztes Jahr am Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London. Als Tom Rakewell gestaltet Shawn Mathey - wie alle anderen Mitwirkenden auch - ein wichtiges Rollendebüt; die "wirklich und echt Liebende" an seiner Seite, Anne, singt Eva Liebau. Toms Widersacher Nick Shadow interpretiert Martin Gantner und als Baba ist Michelle Breedt zu hören. Annes Vater gestaltet Alfred Muff; Kismara Pessatti als Mother Goose sowie Martin Zysset als Sellem komplettieren das Ensemble.

Baritone Rod Gilfry and pianist Peter Walsh perform portions of "Chanson d'amour" by Gabriel Fauré, "Sure on this Shining Night" by Morten Lauridsen, "Le bestiaire: La carpe" by Francis Poulenc, and "Don Quichotte à Dulcinée: Chanson romanesque" by Maurice Ravel. Gilfry also discusses his musical upbringing and career path, what he's learned about being a voice teacher. Rod Gilfry is a two-time GRAMMY nominee, singer and actor who has performed in all the world's music capitals and appears on over 30 recordings. He is acclaimed world-wide in opera, musicals, recitals and cabaret. An important part of his 75-role repertoire are the 13 leading roles he has created in new operas. Recent performances include the Los Angeles Opera productions of David Lang's solo opera "the loser," Matthew Aucoin's "Crossing," and Jake Heggie's "It's a Wonderful Life" at the San Francisco Opera. He recently created the role of Claudius in Brett Dean's "Hamlet" at the Glyndebourne and Adelaide Festivals, with a reprisal at The Metropolitan Opera. His previous appearance at The Metropolitan Opera was in Thomas Adès' "The Exterminating Angel." Vocal Arts DC (VADC) presents classically-trained singers and pianists in Washington, DC, at The Kennedy Center and in educational events. Joining me in this episode, are my friends, Bass-Baritone John Relyea and Composer/Conductor Thomas Adès. This episode was filmed in July 2008 while we were in London performing Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden. John discusses preparing for his debut performance of Nick Shadow, while Thom discusses managing his hectic schedule as an itinerate conductor.
