Johannes Brahms Bach Pease 1892 2017
The Bach-Brahms Project (Live and Unedited) Joel Schoenhals, piano www.joelschoenhals.com Eastern Michigan University Pease Auditorium September 8, 2017 Greg Knollmeyer, video production (http•••) Seven Fantasies, Op. 116 (1892) Johannes Brahms Brahms composed his last twenty piano pieces in the early 1890s, published as Opp. 116, 117, 118, and 119. They reflect Brahms’ direction away from his youthful dramatic, symphonic style toward more meditative qualities. Despite a few youthful pieces, Op. 116 reflects Brahms’ move in the direction of the “autumnal”. There is wisdom and nostalgia that rises from these late works of Brahms – compostitions that perhaps could only be written later in life. Op. 116 begins and ends in D Minor, like two youthful tempestuous bookends, with the philosophical Intermezzi dominating the set in the middle. The exception is the rhapsodic G Minor Capriccio that gives additional contrast. The last three Intermezzi again form a triptych like the Three Intermezzi, Op. 117, but this time in E Major, E Minor, E Major. Brahms take enormous care to create miniatures that each stand on their own as well as an architecture that provides a journey from beginning to end. - Notes by Joel Schoenhals, 2017
