The performance is based on works which were written, composed and played in the concentration camp. The project drew its inspiration from the novel „Gerron“ by Charles Lewinsky, and its aim is to show how meaningful and indispensable to life artistic activity can be. The music performed in Theresienstadt: ballads, pure music, folksongs, dance-music and cabaret-songs, reflects glamour and intimacy – the artistic expression in the camp proved stronger than its abominable and debilitating everyday life. The music, for the inmates provided a spiritual world where the hopelessness of the present could be momentarily suspended. The selected songs, piano-pieces and orchestral works for « als ob ... » were researched by I SALONISTI and then arranged by trusted orchestrators for the quintet. They are all based on original works, written by Karel Berman (the only composer to survive the camp), Robert Dauber, Hans Krasa, Martin Roman, Viktor Ullmann, Erwin Schulhoff, Karel Švenk and Ilse Weber. The aim of « als ob ... » is not to shock, dismay, or to show the depths of the abyss into which mankind can plunge, nor is it to be a history lesson. Its unique purpose is to present this music, which has human and artistic significance that will only continue to grow as the years pass. In collaboration with theatre-director Stephan Grögler, performers Gaëlle Méchaly and I SALONISTI have devised a suitable theatrical space and invite the spectators to join them as witnesses and narrators of these compositions.
