Bennett Kai Imai - Oboe and Electronic Piano Accompaniment I. Moderato 00:00 II. Allegretto 04:22 III. Allegro 08:53 Kishio Hirao +••.••(...)) was a Japanese composer who studied music in Japan and France. He initially studied medicine at Keio University, but he also learned harmony and music theory from Japanese composers Ryutaro Hirota and Satoru Onuma. He then traveled to Paris to study harmony, counterpoint, and flute at the Schola Cantorum de Paris. His teachers include Achille Phillip and Guy de Lioncourt. This piece was composed for a concert series for oboist Seizo Suzuki, whom Hirao met through his eldest daughter studying oboe with him at Tokyo University. Not only did Suzuki urged him to write this piece for him, but Hirao considered the oboe to be the instrument with the most power among the woodwinds in expression. He also enjoyed the oboe's lyricism and tone contrasting with the piano's mechanical soundscape. The first movement is a Moderato in sonata form, staying sensitive and passionate. The second movement has the oboe dancing elegantly above rolling piano notes. The third movement is a lively and blazing fast rondo, containing both nimble and lyrical themes for contrast.
