For guest director Thomas Ostermeier, The Seagull is a love story about broken, nonreciprocal relationships and it mainly shows how the older generation undermines the vigour of young people in order to secure its own position, but also how the younger generation is quick to exchange its ideals for social prestige. It is Ostermeier's first staging of Chekhov. 'Severe, rough and stiflingly beautiful' NRC Handelsblad/ synopsis Konstantin is an aspiring young playwright and in love with Nina, the heroine of his first play. Having penned a manifesto for a new theatre, Konstantin is particularly keen to earn approval for his ideals from his mother, the actress Arkadina. But when the play's premiere at a friend's country estate ends in disaster, the famous actress is unable to see her son as a serious artist. The ambitious Nina then decides to seek her fortune with Trigorin, an older playwright and Arkadina's lover. Hoping he will help her to achieve her dreams, she rejects Konstantin, leaving him in despair. Years later, Nina and Konstantin meet again. Nina's career is in tatters. Trigorin has left her, and yet she is unable to let him go. Catastrophe looms. In The Seagull, everyone longs for love and recognition, but no one seems able to find it. anton chekhov Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born in the Russian port town Taganrog in 1860. While he was studying medicine in Moscow, he wrote his first stories, which were soon published. After his studies, he began a medical practice, which he closed again after only 2 years. Chekhov continued to work as a doctor, but started to concentrate on his career as an author. Eventually, he wrote more than 250 stories and became one of the greatest storytellers in the history of literature. His plays, such as The Seagull, Uncle Vanja, Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard are still regularly performed worldwide. Chekhov's work is characterized by minimal plots, unsurpassed atmosphere studies and character analyses, where the interaction between people is especially important. Chekhov died of tuberculosis at the German health spa Badenweiler in 1904. thomas ostermeier The German director Thomas Ostermeier (1968), artistic leader of the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz in Berlin, has directed plays by e.g. Jon Fosse, Sarah Kane, Lars Norén, Marius von Mayenburg and Mark Ravenhill. During the last couple of years, classical repertoire has gained an important place in his work. Ostermeier directs at a number of different theatres in Europe, has won several theatre awards, is an Artiste Associé of the Festival d'Avignon and was appointed Officier des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 2010. For his first Chekhov production, Thomas Ostermeier is staging the Russian master's razor-sharp and deeply human analysis of the conflict between an up-and-coming generation of young artists and an older generation clinging to its reputation and achievements.
