Digital Program: (http•••) Nevermind The Noise is committed to supporting its members and performers within our community through collaborative projects. The Remote Collaboration Series began in the fall of 2020 pairing Nevermind The Noise composers with three celebrated instrumentalists. - - - - - - - Program - - - - - - - Nicole Russell - "Mouth" Mouth is an exploration of closed-mouth singing and unvoiced sounds. The live voice sings over prerecorded and altered vocal tracks, creating a hazy and droning atmosphere. Inspired by improvisatory humming in R&B, Mouth is my attempt of bringing that world into a minimalist classical context. Blake Opper - "WeThey" WeThey explores our human connection to the past through the stories share and chose to pass down. The text, taken from Anna Moschovakis’ 2016 book They and We Will Get into Trouble for This, weaves together memories from Moschavakis’ life in the East Village of New York City in the early 1990’s as well as the biblical story of Abraham bringing Isaac, his son, to the mountaintop to be sacrificed to God. Both stories are linked by the idea of “paradise” and they are both made meaningful through their retelling. Despite the 3000-odd years between them, these stories are made stories of the present through their retelling. That we are connected to them and that they and we belong to these times. Cole Reyes - "Shelter" For many of us, 2020 was a year where home meant a lot of different things. It was simultaneously where we felt safest and where we felt most susceptible to the world of our own thoughts. I found myself back at my childhood home for the longest period since high school. I challenged myself to cherish this time as best as I could. I challenged myself to make the best of the situation that we had been dealt. How- ever, as expected, this came with significant challenges. I began writing these small poems on my daily walks around my neighborhood, and I chose two of them to set to music in this piece, “Shelter.” Vicki Leona - "Tôi Còn Sống (I Am Alive)" On the corner of Grand and Chrystie St., there is an old lady that sells banh trang. Like the merchants in Vietnam, she would cry out her product in a sing-song voice to let customers know what she was selling. I decided to take a field recording of the walk to and away from her one day and ended up forming a piece about affirmations and existentialism over the coming weeks. Because of the COVID-19 crisis, I could not go home to see my family or fly to Vietnam to see my extended family. More importantly, I could not be with them when they needed my help and comfort. As this piece was written during a volatile time in my life, I couldn’t help but write text that broke down the common affirmations that most of us must face and repeat to feel safe. In a way, this piece is what it feels like to doubt the reasons for the mundanity and loneliness of life. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Follow Us on Social Media!
