Léon Delcroix Wieniawski Indy Sno 1824 1880 1909 1917 1921 1927 1938
Phillip Sear plays the third piece from a set of 'Cinq Epitaphes' from 1917 by the Belgian composer Léon Delcroix +••.••(...)). / Per the Jeanne Inc. website ( (http•••) ) "Leon Delcroix (1880–1938) was a Belgian conductor and composer. He studied piano with J. Wieniawski and composition with both Ysaye and d’Indy. He conducted theatre orchestras in Belgium from 1909-1927, after which he devoted all of his time to composition. His works range from theatrical and symphonic works to chamber ensembles, including several works for string ensembles and a clarinet quartet." A writer in the 'Musical Quarterly' commented in 1921 that "M. Leon Delcroix exhibits in his chamber music qualities of elegant lightness, whose pleasing superficiality one accepts without objection, owing to the taste and discretion with which his music is informed.". Like all the pieces in the set, this is headed by an extract from a poem from a Belgian writer working in French. Here, the poem is from Paul Prist, a sometime winner of the Prix Allan Poe (given for poetry in French by non-French writers) and editor of the journal 'Independence Belge'. I'm not sure of the title of the poem or the collection it comes from, but the extract has a distinctly symbolist feel: "Une paix nuptiale, au fond des étendues Ouvrait avec douceur, ses ailes é²perdues, Et des songes venaient, en un rythme chantant.... ...Il ecoutait en lui ses rêves retentir" This very roughly translates as (corrections welcome!): "A bridal peace at the bottom of the expanses Opened gently, his lost wings, And dreams came, in a singing rhythm .... ... He listened to his dreams come true" The thumbnail shows the painting 'The Dream' by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes +••.••(...)), in which Love, Wealth and Glory appear to a sleeping traveller. / / Played by Phillip Sear (http•••) (Email: •••@••• WhatsApp: (http•••) )
