(Live streamed at WRLDCTY on 24 Oct, 2020, 9:30a.m. HKT) Four personalities find inspiration in and through dim sum, be it redefining the way it’s made (Nicolas Elalouf, Man Mo Dim Sum); bringing traditional Chinese medicine into the fold (Larry Tang, Sohofama); conjuring up magic tricks (Louis Yan, award-winning magician), or learning the craft to burn the midnight wick (Xavier Tsang, BeCandle). Frédéric Chopin Franz Liszt Moscheles Czerny Hummel Johnston 1829

Chopin refers, in a letter dating from the fall of 1829, to having written a study "in [his] own manner," and indeed, a great chasm stands between his achievements and the far drier études of his predecessors (one thinks of Moscheles, Czerny, and Hummel in particular). It was not Chopin's intent, as it was with many nineteenth-century pianist-composers, to create studies of mere technique and raw dexterity; here, instead, are works with an inexhaustible array of textures, moods, and colors to explore. These are works meant for the concert hall as well as for the practice room. The twelve Études published as Chopin's Opus 10 are an indispensable tool of the modern pianist's craft: they are a rite of passage that no serious pianist can ignore. The performer's two hands must join forces to execute the continuous harp-like (or perhaps guitar-like) arpeggiations that run throughout the Étude in E flat major, Op.10, No.11. A plaintive melody rests atop this buoyant, allegretto foundation. Gentle chromatic fluctuations bring this almost other-worldly incarnation to a close. Description by Blair Johnston
Bach Pachelbel Buxtehude Krebs
#baroquemusic #baroquecomposer #choralevariation Out of the Depths, I cry to Thee. (English Translation) This hymn was originally written by Martin Luther, most likely when he was grounded in the Wartburg castle in Germany during his reformation (speculation on my part; I know little of Luther's life or music). Many of his hymns came down to J.S. Bach, who would immortalize them through his various cantatas and organ works. Other organists and composers would do the same; Pachelbel, Buxtehude, Krebs (both of them) and many more would write chorale preludes and partitas. In this recent work, I attempted to combine both Renaissance sound with Baroque handling. This might be a motet or partita, but I'm not certain. The instrumentation is completely open for interpretation, and the only thing important is that all the voices are heard. The challenge was staying somewhat true to Bach's harmonies laid out in the final chorale of cantata 38. Bach's massive arrangement of this tune for organ (BWV 686) utilizes double-pedal technique, and I tried to emulate that idea. This piece has five movements: Chorale Allegro (variation) Gigue Fugue Chorale Also, I've color-coded the subject so it is easier to follow through the course of the piece. I hope you enjoy! A melody says more than a thousand words – and the melodies coming from the fingers of Yann Tiersen even more so. He is a true virtuoso and master of his craft, who was also able to fascinate the audience at SUPERBOOTH21 with his energetic sound collages – a perfect end to the first day of the event. Yann collaborates with the label Mute Records, on which he has been developing his experiments since 2010. His latest album Kerber was released just before SUPERBOOTH21 and shows how Yann uses piano sketches as a source of inspiration for electronic module synthesis. The combination of these two worlds makes the album a unique creative achievement, where the electronic instruments are overlaid and driven by the acoustic elements. With this album in mind and the fact that he has been a regular guest at SchneidersLaden for quite some time, Yann was the perfect musician for a concert at Superbooth. The Yann Tiersen concert was presented by the Miller-Zillmer Foundation. / SchneidersLaden presents SUPERBOOTH22
