Phillip Sear plays the second piece from '3 Miniatures after Shelley' written in February 1918 by the British composer and arranger Gerrard Williams +••.••(...)). / John Gerard Williams (to give him his birth name) was an architect by training, who only took up composition in 1911. Although he had some guidance from the pianist and composer Richard H. Walthew, he was essentially self-taught. He is best known for songs and his many arrangements, but you read more about him and see a list of some of his works here: t.ly/hFHK . Each piece in this set - which is dedicated to the composer's wife - is headed by a verse from the English poet Percy Bysshe Shelley +••.••(...)). This one is prefaced by the (complete) poem 'The Isle' (published, posthumously, in 1824): "There was a little lawny islet By anemone and violet, Like mosaic, paven: And its roof was flowers and leaves Which the summer’s breath enweaves, Where nor sun nor showers nor breeze Pierce the pines and tallest trees, Each a gem engraven;-- Girt by many an azure wave With which the clouds and mountains pave A lake's blue chasm.
