Earplay First Mondays 14: Jean Ahn, Lapis Reprobatus November 2021 Earplayers: Tod Brody, flute; Peter Josheff, clarinet; Thalia Moore, cello Jean Ahn, composer Video by Omid Zoufonoun Audio by Bruce Bennett Produced by Richard Festinger ABOUT LAPIS REPROBATUS Lapis Reprobatus was originally commissioned by Left Coast Chamber Ensemble in 2015 to be performed on their "Left Coast Goes to the Museum" concert. The works commissioned for this program were based on two sculptures that were housed in the de Young Museum's Gallery 16. Each of the two sculptures inspired three works by young composers. Jean Ahn's Lapis Reprobatus was inspired by Cornelia Parker's Anti-Mass sculpture, which represents the charred remains of an Alabama Black Southern Baptist Church that was destroyed by arsonists. Per Rebecca Wishnia's San Francisco Classical Voice review, "Lapis Reprobatus depicts this brokenness through abrupt bursts of pitched and unpitched materials. The overall effect is tremendously sonorous; it exceeds the sum of its parts." The title of the piece evokes Psalm 118:22 "lapis quem reprobaverunt aedificantes factus est in caput anguli" ("The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone."). — J. A. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood OST 3! I do not own FMA/FMAB or any other registered trademarks. If you like this, then I suggest buying the CD! You can buy the CD here: (http•••) Music produced by Akira Senju, performed by the Warsaw Philharmonic Choir, and OP and ED by relative artists. Also, I have been getting many requests as to when songs play in certain parts of the anime. Since this is the last OST, you can check yourself which song it is by checking all the videos or you can send me a link to a stream of the anime and tell me at what time the song you are looking for starts. If you send a message on my channel or in a comment, I will ignore it. Mostly because I'm lazy :P. Enjoy!! Lyrics: Lapis philosophorum lapis ruber lapis quantus sacrificum vis caputo felicitas Debes sapio debes ibi multa miseria tua retro calamitatis habes saputo felicitas Ubi es inpedis terra e tem pus anteactus sapies eo quam erant cadeveris infinitatis. Debes sapio debes ibi multa miseri tua retro calamitatis habes saputo felicitas Ubi es inpedis terra e tem pus anteactus sapies eo quam erant cadeveris infinitatis. Specta mortuus specta si denuo desiderium sapies habebis tueri sanguinem brachi pedis rubus, Lapis philosophorum lapis ruber affecto quam res...? Translation into a poem: Stone of philosophers, ruby red stone, which caused so much sacrifice and misery unknown. Deceptively though, the stone did appeal and made foolish men think it's happiness real. O wise philosopher you must grieve no more if you wish to revive the mirth of before. You must face your past, for you cannot atone for the damage you wrought with the wretched red stone. Where is the land? That land from the past, which many before you sought and amassed? Take heed of their folly, and don't be deceived by the trap which left many despaired and bereaved. Though for happiness, power and ease they did strive, instead they found death and now none are alive. Consider these perished; this warning adhere. Will you continue to seek out this stone you held dear? You who beheld it's baneful hue red when the blood of your own arm and own leg was shed? Stone of philosophers, ruby red stone. When will you cease and leave mankind alone? (Approximation)
