Akira Ifukube Fukai Hayasaka Poulenc Japan Philharmonic Orchestra 1914 1941 1943 1944 2002 2003 2006
Akira Ifukube [伊福部昭] (1914~2006, Japan) Obertura Festiva 'Sa bago Filipinas', original title フィリピン国民に贈る祝典序曲 Japan Philharmonic Orchestra Tetsuji Honna, conducting Recorded: August 25-26, 2003 at Katsushika Symphony Hills, Mozart Hall The political situation under the "Greater East Asian War" is closely related to the birth of this work. On December 8, 1941, Japan declared war on the Allied countries, including the United States, but as the protext, bringing back the Asian regions that had long been colonized by Western powers to Asians was set a reason of war. Although the leaders of Japan did not know how much this was true, the Asian countries, of course, raised the voice that Japan would have to follow the slogan. In August 1943, the Tojo Cabinet finally approved the "independence" of the former British colony, Burma and the former American colony, the Philippines, which were "liberated" by the Japanese army, and thus making both countries an alliance of Japan in the "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere." Anyway, because the new "friendly country" of Japan was born in this way, the Japanese government planned an event to present a musical work celebrating independence to the Philippines and Burma, and selected Akira Ifukube as the Philippine and Shiro Fukai as the Burma. At that time, the Japanese composer circle exhibited the Asian boom, and works inspired by Asian ethnic music were being composed: for example, "Songs of Java" by Shiro Fukai, "Toyo Emaki or Oriental Picture Scroll" by Humiwo Hayasaka, and more. Like this, while the politics and culture were all dyed in the "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere", the "Overture to the nation of Philippines" was written and premiered at the Hibiya Public Hall on January 30, 1944. After the war, its whereabouts had been unknown, but in 2002, the full score was discovered in Tokyo. The work consists the ternary form of A-B-A. A is Allegro Rapsodico. As the title says, it's extremely rhapsodic, and, I wonder if it had the impression of Poulenc's "Conceto for 2 Pianos", anyway, motifs fly away one after another on the land of the sound which is gamelan style or the Southeast Asian style. They are largely based on various Asian pentatonic scals, further, clear quotation from Ifukube's successful work "Japanese Rhapsody" and several prototypes of material which would be used in ballet "Salome" and various film music in post-war appear. B is Andante misteriozo and seems to aim a south-style nocturne. Throughout whole work, it is very similar to "Symphony Concertante for Piano and Orchestra" in terms of musical idea, writing style and details. by Morihide Katayama from KICC-91196~211 "The Artistry of Akira Ifukube 20th anniversary box" booklet

Koyama Nagano Urato Watanabe Watanabe Fukai 1914 2009
Kiyoshige Koyama is one of Japan's leading nationalistic composers. He was born in 1914 in a village deep in the mountains of Nagano Prefecture, and his only exposure to music was through festivals and folk songs sung by the villagers. When a military band came to visit the village, he was shocked by the sound and decided to pursue a career in music. While pursuing a career in teaching, he took lessons from Komei Abe and became friends with Urato Watanabe, which gave him the opportunity to learn about orchestras. However, his music never left his childhood experiences and was based on traditional Japanese music and folk songs, and through the study of these Japanese music, he discovered his own system of harmony and scales, which he used in his own compositions. In his early years, he founded the "New Music Society" with Kiyohiko Kijima and Shiro Fukai, and in his later years, based on his research there, he formed the "Tanishi Society" with Satoru Nakanishi and others, and worked to popularize his own style. Most of his representative works are orchestral works and songs, and only a few are piano works. This piece is one of his earliest works, and has already completed the prototype of his style, with bass sounds reminiscent of village festival drums and passages reminiscent of Nohkan and Shinobue flutes. Unlike his other piano pieces, this one has been completely buried in history and forgotten. I would like to take this opportunity to let more people know about this hidden masterpiece. Kiyoshige Koyama sadly passed away in 2009. This video was made with the help of the Nagoya U. Composers Club.
Shonorities presents Shiro Fukai: Japanese Flute (voice, flute, piano) Tuesday, April 29, 2014, 19:30, Hellenic American Union Theatre Under the auspices of the Japanese Embassy of Athens Shie Shoji / voice Petros Stergiopoulos / flute Evgenia Votanopoulou / piano Programme Note The composer Shiro Fukai, who was mainly known during his lifetime as a music critic, was born in Akita Prefecture in April 1907 and died in Kyoto in 1952. He came to Tokyo at the age of 20, and studied at Kunitachi Music School under Meiro Sugawara. His compositions came to assume an elaborate style based on French impressionistic music and he wrote several well-structured orchestral works. Apart from the cantata Prayer for Peace he left little vocal music and the Japanese Flute written in the 1930s can be said to be his only vocal work that is relatively well-known. This work was rated highly at the time, and one senses the beauty of Japanese lyricism in between the lines.
