И. К. Ioakim Tartakov. A Ball. Old Russian Romance P(. Tchaikovsky - A. Tolstoy). Recorded in the beginning of XX century. The painter is Vladimir Gau. In the midst of the ball In the midst of the noisy ball, amid the anxious bustle of life, I caught sight of you, your face, an enigma. Only your eyes gazed sadly. Your divine voice Sounded like pipes from afar, Like the dancing waves of the sea. Your delicate form entranced me, and your pensiveness, your sad yet merry laughter, has permeated my heart since then. And in the lonely hours of the night, when I do lie down to rest, I see your pensive eyes, hear your merry laugh... And wistfully drifting into mysterious reveries, I wonder if I love you, but it seems that I do! Ioakim Tartakov. Azra. Russian Romance (A. Rubinshtein - H.Heine). Recorded in the beginning of the XX centuary. The Asra Every day the wondrous lovely Sultan's daughter spent the evening On the paths beside the fountain Where the foaming waters murmur. Every day the slave boy watched her On the paths beside the fountain Where the foaming waters murmur; Every day he turned more pallid. Then one eve the princess halted, Firing off the urgent questions: What's your name? I want to know it, And your country and your people! And the slave boy said: They call me Mohammed, I'm from the Yemen, And my tribe / the famous Asra, They who die when love enslaves them. Thanks to The Lied and Art Song Texts Page for the translation.
