I've rendered this simply as it's a short, but nonetheless sweet, march by Thomas E Bulch that appeared on our programme of music from 4th August 2018. Performed here by the Felling Band this march is described in a Lyons' Special List of Brass & Military Band Music as "A fine march in 2-4 time with syncopated solos for basses, euphoniums, trombones etc. This march is respectfully dedicated to Mr. Jas. Northcott, Sandhurst, the oldest bandmaster in the colony. - 1s 6d" The original Sandhurst in Australia became the City of Bendigo named after a corruption of the biblical middle name of English boxing champion William Abednigo Thompson who ran the southern area. It became Bendigo on 8th May 1891. There is a new area of Sandhurst, a locality of Melbourne but the connection to Northcott tells us that this piece is connected to the former Sandhurst that became Bendigo. The march seems to have emerged around about the time of the renaming of that city, so could perhaps be a tribute to the old name as well as Bandmaster Northcott.
