Iannis Xenakis Cavaillé Cavaillé Coll Holloway Notre Dame Paris 1974
Iannis Xenakis – Gmeeoorh, 56 note version for solo organ (1974) Performed by Francis Chapelet on the Cavaillé-Coll organ at Notre Dame, Paris "Commissioned by, and written for the 1974 International Contemporary Organ Music Festival at the Hartt College of Music of the University of Hartford, Conneticut. This work is dedicated to Professor Clyde Holloway, concert organist. In continuation of 'Erikhthon' for piano and orchestra, 'Gmeeoorh', (a free anagram of 'organon') pursues the research of a generalisation of the melodic principle, by using linear arborescences (clonings) undergoing various transformations such as homothetic, rotations, distortions, expansions, etc..." -Iannis Xenakis, from the preface in the score of Gmeeoorh, 56 note version. Iannis Xenakis Claude Helffer Michel Tabachnik Benoit Gibson 1969 1974 1976 1977 1979
Iannis Xenakis' rarely heard second piano concerto, performed here by Claude Helffer with Michel Tabachnik and the Orchestre national de l'ORTF. Erikhthon (1974) may well be the most technically demanding of Xenakis' keyboard works, even more so than the oft-cited Synaphai (1969) known for its use of ten staves. Enormous leaps, extreme tempo, and the sheer physical force compelled by the later composition make it a pianistic tour de force. As Benoit Gibson notes, passages from Erikhthon have been adapted in later works such as Noomena (1974), Khoai (1976), Akanthos (1977), and Palimpsest (1979).
