Sacred music from Renaissance period Missa Gaudeamus - III. Credo Composer: Josquin des Prez Form: Sacred/Mass Instrument: Choir Performer: University of Kansas Collegium Musicum Period: Renaissance Please like, comment and share. Subscribe: (http•••) The Missa Gaudeamus is a musical setting of the Ordinary of the Mass by Franco-Flemish composer Josquin des Prez, probably composed in the early or middle 1480s, and published in 1502. It is based on the gregorian introit Gaudeamus Omnes and its setting is for four voices. The number of sources for this work is relatively high: two printed editions, four reprints and seven manuscripts. Sacred music is defined as the music written for use in religious ceremonies, for religious motives, or under religious influence. One of the most significant examples of religious music is the Mass, a form of composition that sets to music the invariable portions of the liturgy (Catholic, Anglican, or Lutheran). Masses can be written for choir with or without instrumental accompaniment, with some masses conceived as choral-orchestral concert pieces. Josquin des Prez Born: 1455 Died: 27th August 1521 Birthplace: Hainaut (modern-day Belgium), or immediately across the border in modern-day France Josquin des Prez, often referred to simply as Josquin, was a Netherlandish composer of the Renaissance. He is also known as Josquin Desprez and Latinized as Josquinus Pratensis, alternatively Jodocus Pratensis. He himself spelled his name "Josquin des Prez" in an acrostic in his motet Illibata Dei virgo nutrix. He was the most famous European composer between Guillaume Dufay and Palestrina, and is usually considered to be the central figure of the Franco-Flemish School. Josquin is widely considered by music scholars to be the first master of the high Renaissance style of polyphonic vocal music that was emerging during his lifetime. #renaissancemusic #sacredmusic #choir #classicalmusic #mass
