Central to that tradition is the voice of the pipe organ accompanying these beloved scriptures. Over the centuries, various traditions have developed in how the organ is used in Anglican psalmody. There are two traditions which are quite are similar—one in which the organ plays the choral part exactly and the second which closely follows the harmonic structure without being exact—both using colors appropriate to the text. A third tradition arose from these, particularly with choirs which have chanted psalms for many years, in which the organ became an improvisatory voice of its own, underscoring and or highlighting certain texts or ideas while the choir chants, helping to better illuminate the verbal text. It is that particular tradition which we now carry on within our services of worship. After a few lockdowns caused by the global pandemic, it felt like a dream to revive live concerts and perform with public audiences. All these difficulties stimulated my artistic aspiration and refreshed my perspectives in looking at traditional concert practices. For example, before the pandemic, like what most of my pianist colleagues did following concert pianist's career practice, I prepared 1-2 concert recital programmes and mixed-and-matched them for several combinations for each concert season. However, coming out of these uncertain times, certain pre-planned things and practices don't match these new norms anymore, which to a certain extent, helped artists to be more creative and courageous and encouraged us to take artistic risks. So, throughout my concerts in 2021, I have been performing a multitude of various challenging programmes, such as Liszt's 12 Transcendental Etudes in this video; Chopin's complete 24 Etudes Op.10 and Op. 25; Philip Glass's complete Piano Etudes Book I and II (which was the China Premiere); Beethoven/Liszt's Symphony No.5 and Bach's Keyboard Works; plus Schubert's late piano sonatas and impromptus, and my own compositions, as well as eight piano concertos and several collaborative projects, to name a few. Looking back, I think all these concerts I did in 2021 further proved and enlighten my artistic vision of being a creative artist. And it also gave me some first-hand experience and reflections on broadening my artistic horizon and research in performance practice in the 21st century and this digital age. Also, through performing these musical works that transcend culture, time, space and human comprehension, I always find myself in total fascination with the countless possibilities and wonders music has revealed in front of me. And in this particular case - performing Liszt's 12 Transcendental Etudes was something that I've always aspired to do, and every time I performed them as a whole cycle, it felt like going through a life journey that from the energetic first etude to the highly meditative and philosophical last one. I hope you will enjoy this performance of Liszt's Transcendental Etudes - and I look forward to continuing to perform these musical treasures and sharing my fascination with these miniatures for many years to come.
