I Musici Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart 1783 1788
The Adagio and Fugue in C minor, K. 546, is a composition by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for strings. Mozart entered it into his own work catalogue on 26 June 1788 in Vienna as "A short Adagio for two violins, viola and bass, for a fugue which I wrote some time ago for two Pianos".[1] The fugue in question was the two piano fugue in C minor, K. 426, written in December 1783
This is a fabulous piece, in a transcription by Jean Guillou. The fugue was originally written for four-hand piano. Mozart later transcribed it for string quintet, adding the adagio. The fugue (starts 3.05') gets increasingly frenetic/furious as it goes, gradually presenting the subject in every conceivable stretto, rectus and inversus, and working up to an outrageous final outburst. The fugue alternates various plenums: Hoofdwerk + Bovenwerk 16'; Hoofdwerk + Rugwerk; Bovenwerk 8' v Rugwerk 8'; building to all three 16' plenums coupled. www.davidbaskeyfield.com
