OK, that is somewhat of an exaggeration, for the truth is that most music lovers – including the majority of harpsichordists – have never even heard of poor Jollage: his music is almost never played. As a matter of fact, we don’t even know the year he was born. He’s so little known that the only Wikipedia article about him is the one in French. We do know that he became one of the organists of Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris, and was thus somewhat known in his time, though music history later all but buried him in obscurity. And that despite the fact that this guy wrote some excellent pieces for the instrument! That’s why I decided to record one of the two suites that Jollage published in 1738. This suite in G Major contains some pieces that are absolutely charming, as you will hear. The harpsichord sound samples used were recorded from a harpsichord I had years ago, a copy of an original by F.E. Blanchet.
