Giacomo Puccini Fontana Karr Milán Teatro Dal Verme 1884
‘’Le Villi’’ is an opera-ballet in two acts by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Ferdinando Fontana, based on the short story ''Les Willis'' by Alphonse Karr. It is the first opera composed by Puccini and it was first performed at the Teatro Dal Verme, Milan, on 31 May 1884. Puccini wrote ‘’Le Villi’’ to participate in a one-act opera competition. The opera did not deserve even a special mention. Despite that, thanks to the help of Fontana, his librettist, Puccini got the support of influential people to premiere the opera, achieving a remarkable success. The libretto of the opera is nourished by the legends of Central Europe, according to which the Willis are spirits of women who have been betrayed by their lovers. The same theme is played in the ballet ‘’Giselle’’ and the opera ‘’The Merry Widow’’.
