Hermann Spielter Mana Zucca Brahms Severe 1860 1897 1900 1925
The German composer Hermann Spielter +••.••(...)) seems to have emigrated to the USA in the early-mid-1890s, where he became a conductor, pianist and composition teacher (at the New York College of Music). Amongst his students was the prolific American composer Mana-Zucca. Spielter seems to have returned to Germany several times in the early 1900s, however. A review of a performance of Brahms' Requiem conducted by him in April 1900 included the intriguing comment that he 'wielded the baton... with all of his accustomed skill, although his physical health is such that the exertion must have entailed a severe strain'. He obviously recovered from his ailment as he lived another 25 years. His wife, Josephine Sonntag Spielter, was a singing teacher; his son, William Spielter (1897-?) was born in New York and became a Hollywood composer and arranger in the 1930s: and (I surmise that) the piano teacher, writer on technique, and founder of the New Hampshire Music Festival, Hedwig Spielter, was his daughter. This attractive gavotte, published in Germany at the end of the 19th century has a very Brahmsian middle section. / / Played by Phillip Sear (http•••) (Email: •••@••• WhatsApp: (http•••) )
