A collection of photos of people smiling taken during the 1850s. The criteria for smiling in the collection are photographs where a person's teeth are visible, as many times I have found that claims of a smile can be hard to verify without this rule. The Te Deum by the French composer Georges Bizet (WD 122) is a five-part setting of the Ambrosian hymn of praise for solos, choir and orchestra. Bizet composed it in 1858 during a stay in Rome as a fellow at the age of just under 20. Besides the Ave Maria (WD 134), the Te Deum is the composer's only sacred work. In France there was a long tradition of large-scale productions of the Te Deum, such as that of François-Joseph Gossec, the three versions of the Te Deum by Jean-François Lesueur, master of Berlioz, and finally the mighty version of Hector Berlioz himself, the before which Bizet probably participated (see also Te Deum (Berlioz)). Bizet may also be familiar with Joseph Haydn's 1800s Te Deum. The influence of Italian sacred music of the time, which used elements of opera music, is clearly evident. With this work Bizet wanted to win the presumably coveted Prix Rodrigues, competition for scholarship holders of the Prix de Rome, for the best sacred composition. However, that Prix Rodrigues was not as popular as is generally assumed. Bizet even doubted that this advertisement really existed, and only one other competitor had applied, the composer Adrien Bartheche won the Rome Scholarship in 1854 (Bizet himself won it in 1857). However, Bizet did not achieve the desired success, probably because he allowed himself too much freedom in the use and treatment of the text and did not pay enough attention to the prescribed liturgical form. The fact that Barthe was preferred to him was particularly annoying because he had already planned the considerable cash prize for a trip to Naples. After the bankruptcy, the work fell into oblivion and was kept in the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris. As a result, Bizet composed very few sacred songs and completely dispensed with large-scale sacred compositions. Some lines of the first part were used in the "Hymn to Brahma" from his work Les pêcheurs de perles, and a reuse of some passages was foreseen in the project for the Geneviève de Paris oratory; otherwise the Te Deum was never performed or published. It didn't premiere until March 1970; In 1971 the German composer Johannes Wojciechowski gave (1912–2005) published for the first time as a piano reduction and choir excerpt based on the autograph score of Bizet by Verlag N. Simrock. In December 2004 the French publisher Éditions À Cœur Joie published another edition as score for conductor (full orchestral score), vocal score and choral score.
